Nissan Readies its Electric Car Global Debut

Nissan will unveil more than just a building when it cuts the ribbon on its new Global Headquarters in Yokohama, Japan on 2 August – the company will reveal a new electric car based on the Tiida hatchback.

Developed in-house by Nissan, the electric motor – powered by lithium-ion battery technology – delivers 80kW of power and 280Nm of torque. Current 1.8-litre petrol-fuelled Tiidas sold in Australia deliver 93kW/174Nm.

The 24kWh laminated compact battery pack is located under the vehicle floor for efficient packaging – the cabin and cargo space remains the same as petrol Tiidas – and the layout permits a smooth underfloor airflow to reduce drag.

A regenerative brake system recharges the battery during deceleration and braking to extend the driving range on one full charge to more than 160kms.

Supporting the electric Tiida is a sophisticated EV-IT system to make electric driving convenient 24/7.

The vehicle has an on-board transmitting unit which sends signals to a global data center. With this system the driver is able to touch a button and the navigation map displays the driving radius within the current battery charge, calculates if the vehicle is within range of a pre-set destination and provides detailed locations and information on available charging stations.

A driver can use an on-line website or even a mobile phone to monitor the state of charge – a message alert can be sent alerting you that the vehicle is re-charged and ready to go.

A timer function enables the driver to set battery charging to begin at a specific time so that off-peak electricity rates can be used. It also enables the Tiida’s owner to switch-on the air-conditioning remotely so the vehicle cabin is comfortable as soon as you arrive at the vehicle.

Nissan is working diligently on zero-emission mobility but the company says its first electric vehicle, due for launch next year, will not have the Tiida body – it will have its own unique design.
