After the Pulsar was re-christened the “Tiida”, it’s seems to have spelt nothing but trouble with a capital T for Nissan. From the somewhat controversial and feminine Tiida name itself (perhaps ad guru Siimon Reynolds needs to rethink his ‘double ii theory’ on this one?), to the “I’ll have what she’s having” style advertising campaign with Sex in the City’s Kim Cattrall, the Tiida just apparently can’t seem to get it right. Or can it?

Sure, the Tiida isn’t the best car in its class, however, I’ve spoken to many very content Tiida owners who happily rave about their purchase and after driving one myself, I can see why.

The Tiida is very comfortable and thus, endearing to own and to drive. This is one of the roomiest small cars I’ve encountered, easily fitting five adults, with much more room inside than initially suggested from the exterior.

The boot is big and very practical and with additions such as power steering, cruise control, front map lights, keyless entry, air conditioning and a height adjustable drivers seat, it all adds up to a pleasant overall experience for passengers.

I found the engine responsive enough and the car held up well on the open road, although I found the gear box a little clunky during gear changes and a touch ‘rolly’ around the corners.

Overall, the Tiida was an adequate drive; light, perky and responsive when required and extremely easy to park and manoeuvre in and around traffic.

When it comes to the exterior, the Tiida isn’t the sexiest looking car around but, as mentioned, this hasn’t deterred owners from loving it just the same. Looks aren’t everything you know, and this car seems to hold a girl-next-door kind of appeal – it isn’t offensive yet it isn’t quite the super-model either.

Safety wise, the Tiida is well equiped with dual front SRS airbags, curtain airbags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners (with load limiters), body zone construction, side intrusion beams and for those with small children – child safety locks and three separate child anchorage points for the baby car seat.

And with ABS, EBD & BA, the Tiida scored a 4/5 star safety rating from ANCAP.

The Tiida is available in ST, ST-L, Hatchback and Sedan models.
