Mercedes-Benz and its sports tuner AMG have revealed the rip-snorting latest version of the beautiful CLS 63 AMG.
Powered by a bi-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 engine delivering 410kW/800Nm, the newcomer is actually 32 per cent more fuel efficient than its naturally-aspirated predecessor – rated at 9.9l/100kms. For those who can’t stretch to the ultimate CLS 63 AMG, the company does offer a ‘standard’ version with 386kW/700Nm (it runs less turbocharger boost).
The new Mercedes-Benz/AMG bi-turbo V8 is predictably high-tech – air/water intercooling, generator management, and spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezo injectors are just the start. Drive is to the rear wheels via an AMG SPEEDSHIFT seven-speed automatic transmission.
Underneath is an AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with electronically-controlled dampers, a new front axle and AMG’s electromechanical sports steering. Ceramic composite high-performance brakes are on the options list.
Externally, AMG reduces weight by using aluminium for the doors, bonnet, front fenders, bootlid, parcel shelf and some support sections.
There is the usual external and internal AMG enhancements, including – straight from Formula One – a new leather-wrapped steering wheel with flat sections top and bottom. And driver-assistance systems are also numerous including Active Blind Sport Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist.
The Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG is sold in Europe in standard form, with the AMG Performance Package and a radical ‘Edition 1’ version with grey matt paint. There is also a range of accessories including a locking rear differential.
