2016 Volkswagen Caddy and Caddy Van Launched

Volkswagen Australia has launched the updated 2016 Caddy commercial cargo and crew van range this week.

The Caddy van range is available in three different bodystyles the short wheel base (SWB) Caddy van, the long wheel base (LWB) Caddy Maxi van and the Caddy Maxi Crew van with seating for five.

Buyers looking for the runner base model will need to wait until next year and can expect to pay around $24,000 TSI160, with a small 63kW/160Nm engine and manual gearbox only.

The 4th generation Volkswagen Caddy vans at launch will be powered exclusively by the new 220TSI engine and matched to either a 6-speed manual or for an extra $3,000 buyers can opt for a 7-speed DSG transmission. The 1.4-litre engine produces 92kW at 4800rpm and 220Nm between 1500 and 2500rpm.

Fuel consumption has been improved by around 11 per cent on the outgoing model with VW claiming combined figures of 6.0 litres per 100km with DSG and 6.2l/100km for the manual.

The diesel powered Caddy vans won’t be available until at least midway through 2016 once VW have resolved their emissions scandal.

The all important dimensions and load carrying abilities on the 2016 Volkswagen Caddy are roughly the same as the outgoing model as VW said they wanted buyers to be able to easily transfer their existing set-ups in to the new vans.

Caddy SWB is 4408mm long, 2065mm wide and 1836mm high on a 2682mm wheelbase and can carry 3200 litres and can carry 773kg.

The Caddy LWB Maxi and Crew van increase the length by 470mm their wheelbase is 324mm-longer, the Maxi has 4200L cargo area whilst the Crew van is 3950L with rear seats folded and 1650L with seats in place.

Volkswagen has installed safety technology that was previously only found on their passenger car range with the Caddy van now receiving Multi-Collision Braking and Fatigue Detection systems as standard. 

Standard equipment across the range include:

  • Four airbags
  • Multi-collision braking system
  • Daytime running lights
  • Single sliding side door (Maxi gets dual sliding doors)
  • 16-inch steel wheels and full-size spare
  • Electric windows
  • Fatigue Detection system
  • Cruise control with speed limiter
  • 5.0-inch touchscreen
  • USB/AUX/SD/Bluetooth
  • Three-spoke steering wheel audio/cruise/phone buttons
  • Digital speedo
  • Cloth seats with driver’s height adjustment

The options list on the on the Caddy van is long but some of the key options include

  • Metallic/Pearl paint — $890
  • Lifting tailgate (rather than barn) — $100
  • 16-inch alloy wheels — $990
  • Rear parking sensors — $590
  • Reverse-view camera with sensors— $1090

The Caddy Van has a high level of customization and packages to help buyers find the right set-up for the outset. Some of the key packages and options include:

Driver Assistance Package at $2,260. The Driver Assistance Package equips a TSI220 Caddy Van, Maxi Van or Crewvan with additional safety and convenience features. The pack upgrades the van with Adaptive Cruise Control with additional ‘stop and go function’ for DSG transmissions, Forward Collision Warning ‘Front Assist’ with City emergency Braking, Front fog lights with static cornering function, a Light & Sight system which offers auto dimming inside the rear view mirror, automatic headlight activation with separate daytime driving lights, ‘Leaving Home’ and manual ‘Coming Home’ function, as well as rain-sensing wipers.

Interior Comfort Package at $670. Offers the Light & Sight system: auto dimming inside rear view mirror; automatic headlight activation with separate daytime running lights; ‘Leaving Home’ and manual ‘Coming Home’ function, rain sensing wipers, height adjustment for front passenger’s seat (standard for Crewvan), manually adjustable lumbar support for front passenger’s seat and a 12-volt socket in the dashboard.

Appearance Package priced from $890 (not available for Caddy Crewvan). The optional Appearance Package offers body coloured bumpers, protective side moulding, exterior mirror housings, door handles and sliding door cover.

There are 5 different Window Packages and pricing starts from $690. This package simply adds fixed side windows at the front and rear of the load area (left and right). This package can also be optioned with a lifting tailgate with window and spoiler.

Window Package (Crewvan only). Finally, this package offers Caddy Crewvan the option to include fixed side windows at the rear of the load area (left and right).
