With local launch imminent, Mercedes-Benz has announced some details on the new Mercedes-Benz CLS lineup.
The four model range to be launched later this month starts with the six-cylinder turbo-diesel Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 CDI, priced at $159,200 and the range-topper is the bi-turbo V8 petrol Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG, priced at $263,500. The Mercedes-Benz CLS 500 and CLS 350 will follow.
Technical changes are highlighted by massive gains in fuel consumption – improved by up to 31 per cent.
The high-performance, bi-turbo V8-powered Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG adopts the new 5.5-litre engine and delivers fuel economy of 10.l/100kms compared to 14.5l/100kms for the outgoing 6.2-litre powerplant. Output is up with 386kW/700Nm on tap (410kW/800Nm with the optional Performance Pack).
Aerodynamics and weight savings are part of the picture with the new CLS boasting frameless all-aluminium doors (24 kgs lighter). And although the new body is wider than the predecessor, its more slippery through the air with the drag Cd down by 13 per cent to 0.26.
Another fuel saving (0.3l/100kms) comes from the new electromechanical power steering system which was first seen on the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Also shared with the E-Class is Mercedes-Benz’ new, light weight, three-link front/multi-link rear suspension system.
Styling changes are substantial and overall the new CLS is more aggressive – highlighted by a muscly front end reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and featuring full LED headlights.
Same inside with the expected luxury items and extensive customization options including five colours, five trims and even three different grades of leather.
Car Showroom will drive the new Mercedes-Benz CLS lineup at the launch in a few weeks.
