Volkswagen’s local arm has details some changes to its venerable Golf lineup, ahead of the arrival of the 2019 model year. Due to tightening emissions regulations in Europe the lineup we’ll get here will be smaller too, though a simplified range is never a bad thing.

110TSI models have been shelved altogether, with the Trendline grade now serving as the new entry point. The equipment list will remain unchanged though, so expect to see things like autonomous emergency braking, reversing camera, 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit (with Apple & Android smartphone mirroring), all-round parking sensors, LED daytime running lights and LED taillights all expected to stay on.

Comfortline models gain a bit of kit above Trendline cars, adding things like power-folding side mirrors, keyless entry and go, satellite navigation, dual-zone climate control, 17-inch alloys and a smattering of chrome.

Step up to Highline cars and you see things like the Driver Assistance Package (optional on all grades) get lobbed on as standard. That means adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and park assistance all come as standard.

In addition to the Driver Assistance Package, the Sound & Vision package (available on Comfort- and Highline models) will add a virtual instrument cluster, a larger 9.2-inch touchscreen system, and a 400W Dynaudio sound system. R-Line packs will gain 18-inch alloys, privacy glass, adaptive-ratio steering, and stiffer suspension.

The performance Golf lineup gets some changes too. The GTI now comes with ‘Performance’ spec as standard, so that’s inclusive of an uprated engine (180kW/370Nm), seven-speed double-clutch gearbox, larger brakes, and a trick limited-slip diff. The Driver Assistance package gets added to the list of standard kit as well.

The Golf R is much the same, with the inclusion of advanced driver aids the headline update. The options pack have seen some changes too, with GTI cars being offered with the Sound & Style package (19-inch alloys, bigger sat-nav, voice control, and uprated stereo), as well as a Luxury package (leather upholstery, electric drivers’ seat, heated front pews, glass sunroof).
