The 30th annual GTI gathering is now underway in Europe in Refnitz, by the shores of Lake Worthersee and not surprisingly, Volkswagen – the company which started it all – uncorked some crackers.
Headline billing went to a cabriolet version of the high performance Golf R.
The open-top Golf R scores more performance (power is up to 199kW/torque is up to 350Nm) and – like its hardtop sibling – can sprint zero to 100km/h in under six seconds.
Also like the hardtop, the Golf R cabriolet runs sports suspension (25mm lower ride height), 17-inch brakes with blue-painted ‘R’ logos and 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside are race seats trimmed in grey Nappa leather, carbon accents and sand-blasted aluminium door sills.
Also shown by Lake Worthersee were two Golf R concepts (one grey and one blue) highlighting new interior combinations (and both powered by the new high performance 2.0-litre engine).
