Volkswagen has added a fuel economy king to its local Golf lineup with the launch of the Golf BlueMotion.
Priced at $28,990, the Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion is powered by a 77kW, 1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and returns fuel consumption as low as 3.8l/100kms – that’s better than Toyota hybrid Prius but doesn’t quite match Ford’s 3.7l/100kms Fiesta Econetic (priced at $24,990).
The Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion is also very clean – Volkswagen says its 99g/km of C02 emissions represent the best in the segment.
Under the bonnet, the 1.6-litre TDI engine has auto star/stop, regenerative braking and a revised engine management system delivering a reduced idle speed and drive is via a five-speed manual transmission with taller third, fourth and fifth gears.
Externally, the Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion rides 15mm lower and features substantial aerodynamic changes (including R-line side skirts and the GTI roof spoiler) – all to make it smoother through the air. Wheels are 15-inch alloys fitted with low rolling resistance tyres.
A tyre repair kit replaced the conventional spare wheel (to save weight).
Inside the Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion features the hallmark Golf quality but with subtle changes including new seat fabrics with blue highlights, a revised multi-function dashboard display with gear shift indicators and titanium trim.
Only available as a five-door, the Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion runs the usual comprehensive Volkswagen safety features including seven airbags and ESP.
