Volkswagen has unveiled the sixth generation Golf GTI with substantially more technology but prices still start at $38,990 (three-door manual).

Faster and more powerful than any previous GTI, the new sixth-gen model looks to continue the trend for the hot-hatch that started the hot-hatch revolution more than three decades ago.

The turbocharged 2.0-litre engine remains with power up by 8 kW to 155kW from 5,300 rpm. Maximum torque is unchanged at 280Nm but is available over a wider range of engine speeds - from 1,700 to 5,200 rpm.

Drive is via a six-speed manual or six-speed Direct Shift automatic. New on the sixth-gen model is Volkswagen's Extended Electronic Differential Lock (XDL) which aims to improve traction and reduce understeer in corners.

Volkswagen's engineers have also made the new GTI cleaner with emissions down to 178g/km on the automatic model and fuel economy improved to 7.6l/100kms.

Adaptive Chassis Control is available as an option. This driver select system provides normal, comfort or sport settings for altered suspension, steering and accelerator response.

Golf GTI rides on unique springs and dampers - the ride is lowered by 22mm at the front and 15mm at the rear.

Like the rest of the Golf range, the GTI is also equipped with ABS anti-lock brakes, Electronic Stabilization program (ESP) and seven airbags (including for the first time a drivers' knee airbag). Golf carries the maximum five-star rating by both EuroNCAP and the local ANCAP organization.

On the outside, Volkswagen's styling team - headed by Walter de Silva - has delivered subtle changes that make both three-door and five-door versions look sharp.

Slightly longer, lower and wider than the standard Golf, the GTI features a large honeycomb front grille, stylish 'Denver' 17-inch alloy wheels (18-inch 'Detroit' wheels are a $1,200 option), a subtle rear wing and diffuser between the twin exhaust tailpipes.

Inside are red and black tartan cloth sports seats (a throwback to the original GTI) and a nice flat-bottom leather-trimmed sports steering wheel. Vienna leather for the interior is a $3,300 option.
