No, not extra time on your favourite course, it’s the larger Volkswagen Golf Plus which debuts this week at the Frankfurt Motor Show ahead of global sales from mid next year.
At this stage called the ‘Golf Sportsvan Concept’, the newcomer is the successor to the Golf Plus model which has not been sold in Australia.
At 4330mm in length, the larger Golf is 83mm longer than a regular Golf hatchback, 48mm longer in the wheelbase but still 224mm shorter than the Golf wagon. All about extra practicality and space, the concept car shown in Frankfurt is 80mm wider an 126mm higher than the Golf hatchback.
So cargo space is up. That’s an extra 74-litres (498-litres) with the rear seat in place, 1,512-litres with the rear seat folded or the rear seat can slide forwards giving you 585-litres. The passenger seat folds flat enabling a load-length of 2.48-metres.
Based on Volkswagen’s MQB platform, the Golf Plus boasts the usual array of Volkswagen safety technology including, in a first for Golf, a blond-spot monitor.
Under the bonnet is a choice of three turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engines or three turbo-diesels.
Volkswagen has hinted the bigger Golf may score a new moniker (replacing Golf Plus) when it hits showrooms next year.
