Volkswagen’s 1.2-litre, $22,990 entry-level Golf 77TSI has been named by Wset Australia’s Royal Automobile Association (RAC) as Australia’s cheapest small car to run.
The Golf’s result in the RAC’s vehicle cost survey shatters the opinion that European cars are expensive to operate as the Golf topped a field which included Hyundai i30, Holden Cruze and Toyota Corolla.
In reaching its findings, the RAC survey looked at items such as depreciation, service costs, fuel consumption, servicing, replacement parts such as tyres and loan interest charges. Charges were calculated on private ownership over five years, averaging 15,000kms of motoring annually.
Volkswagen’s Golf 77TSI employs the German manufacturer’s brilliantly engineered 1.2-litre, turbocharged petrol engine which delivers 77kW/175Nm while retuning combined cycle fuel consumption of only 6.1l/100kms.
