Pricing and specification info on the 2019 Golf R have been released by Volkswagen Australia, marking the ‘streamlining’ of the AWD performance hatch to just 2 variants with the addition of a limited run of 400 units of Special Editions that are loaded with kit from the R Performance catalogue.
Starting from November, the Golf R Special Edition will carry a $5,500 premium over the $56,490 Golf R in standard guise, and be headlined by its standard titanium Akrapovic exhaust system, which is 7 whole kilograms lighter than in the standard car and promises to deliver even more of that signature four-pot EA888 and DSG combo farts and crackles.
A deeper engine note is also part of the new exhaust package, which was developed with close cooperation between VW and Akrapovic. Furthermore, the Special Edition also comes fitted with stronger brakes with cross-drilled rotors and more lightweight performance brake pads that sit behind the 19-inch Pretoria alloy wheels in gloss black, further reducing unsprung weight by 9.6kg. Each Special Edition also has the Dynaudio Excite 400W premium audio system equipped (itself a $1,000 option).
Under the bonnet, both the standard R and the Special Edition are powered by the familiar 2.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol, generating 213kW and 380Nm and transmitted to all four corners via the 4Motion system and a 7-speed wet-clutch DSG dual-clutch transmission.
Both come with low-speed AEB and pedestrian monitoring, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Traffic Jam Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Dynamic Cornering Lights. Inside, the Golf R comes as standard with Volkswagen’s Active Info Display digital instrument cluster and a 9.2-inch Discover Pro infotainment system with App-Connect and in-built satellite navigation.
