Unrivalled.

Mercedes-Benz continues its march forwards in developing the ‘reborn’ Maybach brand, unveiling the stunning new Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet concept which, “with its sensual, emotionally appealing design and innovative technical concept solutions, defines the ultimate in luxury of the future.”

“The two-seater model pays homage to the glorious automotive haute-couture of hand-finished, exclusive cabriolets. The glamorous cabriolet reinterprets classic, emotional design principles in an extravagant way, and combines intelligent beauty with classic aesthetic proportions and a reduced, technoid appearance — a perfect embodiment of the design philosophy of ‘Sensual Purity.’” – Mercedes-Benz

Aside from being gorgeous, the 6 Cabriolet is an electric car. 550kW of power is touted from an unspecified battery pack, with the long-tailed cruiser capable of hitting 100km/h from rest in under 4-seconds, hurtling on without relent all the way up to its limited top-speed of 250km/h. Knowing that all that grunt would eat up power, the Vision 6 Cabriolet is equipped with a 350kW fast-charging system capable of increasing range by 100km for every 5-minutes of charge.

At nearly 6-metres long, it’s certainly no SLC. The 6 Cabriolet invokes the rich history of open-top cruising, harking back to coachbuilt cabriolets of the past. The 6 Cabriolet manages to incorporate traditional proportions of art deco design into an entirely modern, contemporary shell. The upright nose marks the start of elegantly flowing likes that move uninterrupted through the profile, all the way to the elongated tail, tying all the character creases together in stunning fashion (and then garnished with full-width LED taillights and a gorgeous third-brake light in the centre).

"The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet takes modern luxury into the realms of the ultimate in luxury, and is the perfect embodiment of our design strategy. Breathtaking proportions combined with a luxurious "haute couture" interior help to create the ultimate experience," — Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Daimler AG

Finished in “Nautical Blue Metallic,” the design of the 6 Cabriolet combines the tradition of the brand into an experience that has only ever been seen once before in the Vision 6 coupé that Mercedes tempted us with last year. The cabin of the 6 Cabriolet shares a lot of its design and features with the fixed-roof model we’ve seen before. The generously-sized cabin is designed as a “360º open-air luxury lounge,” adopting a design that emphasises the space and width of the 6 Cabriolet, finished in stunning white nappa leather. The interior is peppered with details finished in rose gold, with the seats themselves featuring an interesting “futuristic interpretation” with individual ‘studs’ of the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star, backlit in blue.

In this hyper-futuristic cabin, the open-pore unfinished wood and inlaid aluminium feel almost dated.

As per any concept car, the Vision 6 packs the sort of tech that you’d expect from a car of the future. It “anticipates the needs of its passengers” and returns the results and required information in real-time. Everything is controlled either by voice or touch, combining penultimate luxury and intelligence. New to the concept is a ‘Concierge’ function, allowing you to talk to the car and give it instructions in a casual, friendly manner. Like Siri, for your Mercedes.

It’s a disappointment to say the least that the Vision 6 Cabriolet is, for all intents and purposes, a design study and concept car. If you’re lusting after this car as badly as we’d expect you to be… would an S-Class cabriolet do?
