Following the teasers and leaks for the upcoming 6-metre coupe that Mercedes-Maybach had slated for reveal at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the behemoth Vision 6 Coupe Concept has been officially revealed.
Actually, that name is only true if you round off the car’s actual length - 5.7 metres. That, however, is plenty long enough for a car that doesn’t really offer that real estate in many practical ways. Rather, this is very much a car of leisure and luxury.
More than the retro-futuristic styling, enormous 24-inch wheels, and gullwing doors, this concept represents a possible shift in the Mercedes-Maybach brand, which up until now had only been relegated to producing more luxurious limousine versions of the S-Class with only some minor stylistic differences.
Perhaps Daimler is planning to position the brand to directly compete with marques such as Rolls Royce, at which point the 6 Coupe could emerge in the future as a production model to rival the two-door Wraith.
As suspected and in-line with Mercedes-Benz’s shift toward electrified vehicles, this Maybach-branded concept is powered by four asynchronous electric motors - one for each wheel - that produces a quoted combined output of around 559kW. There was no supplied torque figure, curiously, but we imagine it to have colossal twisting power as it apparently has a sub 4.0 second 0-100km/h sprint time.
Also rather curiously, this Vision 6 Coupe, packs a rather middling capacity battery for its imposing size at 80kWh. Maybach say that the lithium-ion pack can store enough charge to power the car through over 500km of driving. Just imagine how much more it would have if they maximised all that space forward of the passenger cell.
Also notable concerning the car’s drivetrain is the inclusion of a quick charge function. No doubt something out of Mercedes-Benz’s research and development skunkworks, it can make use of a 350kWh charging system to supply up to 100km of range after just 5 minutes charge time.
Inside, the Vision 6 Coupe is just as futuristic as the exterior, albeit minus some of that retro sensibility. They’ve taken a new approach to interior ergonomics to produce what they’ve dubbed a ‘360-degree lounge’ that wraps around the passengers to give a sense of freedom and space. The cabin is adorned with wooden accents, an elm floor, and sculpted white leather surfaces.
Of course, just like the higher-end of current Mercedes-Benz cars, gone are the traditional analogue controls and instrumentation, instead replaced with digital readouts and dynamic function keys.
We’ll keep a keen eye on where Daimler is aiming to take their Mercedes-Maybach brand but it does look like we’ll be witness to an interesting time for the more-than century old prestigious nameplate.
