Suzuki is poised to release (or at least publicly unveil) the next generation of its popular Swift hatch. Actually, it has been in that position for some time now, with fans and observers wondering exactly when that date might be.
But a new report from Autocar UK seems to confirm what most of us were expecting: that Suzuki would leverage its new turbocharger technology (dubbed the Boosterjet line) to replace the naturally aspirated four-pots that are currently found in today’s Swift.
The report tells of the upcoming Swift Sport, saying that it will use the 1.4-litre turbocharged engine from the Vitara to power the frenetic hatch. Perhaps with the extra torque surge, there will be less frenzy and a more unhurried driving experience.
Crucially, it’s enough raw grunt to allow some quite immediate acceleration from a car that is rumoured to weigh less than 1,000kg – that is after Suzuki lightens its base Swift to create the Sport version.
In the Vitara, the 1.4-litre unit produces 103kW and 220Nm of torque, but it isn’t yet known whether Suzuki will choose to alter the output before dropping it into the next Swift Sport.
Leaked pictures surfaced some months ago that seem to depict what the next Swift would look like, and in strikingly good detail too. Of note was the updated interior which looks have a much more current layout with a touchscreen infotainment, soft touch material, and dark red accents.
It all looks rather promising.
