Renault has finally peeled back the veils on the sedan version of its popular Megane hatch after filling that space previously with the Fluence in some markets.

The Megane is currently in its fourth generation after being launched at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, bringing the French marque’s newest and most appealing design language, more technology, updates engines, and an air of premium that the mid-size hatch previous lacked.

In some markets the car will be called the Megane Grand Coupe – which makes no sense - while others will make due simply with the much more appropriate Megane Sedan moniker.

Aside from that bit of confusion, this new car isn’t all that surprising when considering a sedan version of the Megane IV. Renault has retained the exterior visual cues that endeared itself positively to critically and to customers.

At the front there’s the new corporate face that wears the large diamond logo and the distinctive C-shaped LED headlamps with that are finding their way across all Renault offerings. The front bumper and hood look indistinguishable from the hatch and wagon.

The strong creases return too, running down the car’s side and paired up with some flared arches for more aggressive road presence, particularly seen here with the diamond-cut glossy alloy wheels. It’s profile too is a cross between regular sedan and fastback body styles.

Inside, the Megane Sedan gets a cabin layout identical to the hatch and the wagon and overall interior volume shouldn’t be far off from either. Customers can specify the optional 8.7-inch R-Link 2 infotainment system, 7-inch instrument panel display, and comes with safety kit such as automated emergency braking and lane departure warning.

In Europe, the Megane Sedan will be offered with 2 petrol engine options (SCe 115, TCe 130) as well as 3 diesels (dCi 90, 1110, or 130) that’s mated to either a CVT for the base petrol model and either a 6-speed manual or the EDC dual-clutch box (6 or 7-speed) for the rest of the range.

The new fourth-generation Renault Megane are expected make their Australian premiere in September in hatch and wagon form but we now expect that the sedan to make an entrance as well.
