Renault has confirmed its all-electric Fluence sedan – the Fluence ZE (zero emissions) will be launched locally next year.
Initially the Renault Fluence ZE will be seen in Canberra (mid 2012) ahead of full local sale later.
Renault Australia is partnering with global electric car charging provider Better Place. Under the agreement, Better Place will deliver charge points and battery switch stations for Renault Fluence ZE owners - a charge point will fully recharge the batteries in 6-8 hours or depleted batteries can be exchanged for fully-charged units in around four minutes.
Better Place says power for its charge points will be drawn from renewable energy sources.
Significantly, the Renault Fluence ZE is a larger C-Segment size sedan (while the yet-to-be-launched Nissan LEAF is a conventional hatchback size, the now-on-sale Mitsubishi I-MiEV electric vehicle is a compact). The electric motor is housed under the bonnet and the 48-module lithium-ion batteries are fitted behind the rear seats.
The Renault Fluence ZE provides 70kW of power and 226Nm of torque, a top speed of 135km/h and range between re-charges of 185kms. The altered drivetrain means the Renault Fluence ZE has a 50/50 front/rear weight distribution and the Goodyear EfficientGrip low rolling resistance tyres feature a conventional tread pattern – all of which means high standard ride and handling.
Externally, the Renault Fluence ZE is 130mm longer than conventional Fleunce sedans (to accommodate the battery pack) and also features aerodynamic changes which reflect the altered cooling requirements of an electric vehicle.
Inside is revised instrumentation and a Better Place OSCAR satellite navigation system which combines conventional route guidance with locations for charge spots and battery switch stations.
“The Renault Fluence ZE will be the first family-sized all-electric powered sedan to enter the Australian market,” revealed Renault Australia managing Director, Justin Hocevar. “We are taking the lead in offering Australia’s fleet and family buyers access to a vehicle that we are confident will meet their needs for an environmentally friendly vehicle that generates no emissions when driven.”
