It was just recently that we brought you news of a tuning kit for the Mk4 Ford Focus ST by world-renowned British tuner Mountune. Now though, the company has brought out a kit for Volkswagen’s Golf GTI Mk7 and 7.5 – called the Mountune52 Stage 2+, which retails from £2,099 (AU$4,191).
Unlike the Ford’s Focus ST's m330 kit – which is applied non-evasively – the aptly named Mountune52 Stage 2+ does involve getting your hands dirty. But if you live in the UK, Mountune’s engineers in Essex will have the kit fitted on your Golf GTI for a price, and throw in an oil and filter service while they’re at it.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI, as many of you know, is powered by an EA888 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine which produces 180kW and 370Nm from the factory. However, with the Stage 2+ kit applied to it, the performance bar is raised. The TSI mill now churns out 287kW and a staggering 510Nm of twist. That’s is a gain of 70 percent. All of which is sent to the front wheels.
In order to reach this level of performance, the EA888 engine’s turbocharger is chucked out and replaced with one from a Golf R. The IS38 turbocharger – manufactured by IHI – is an OEM unit found on Volkswagen Group products built on MQB-based platforms like the Golf R, Audi S3 and Audi TTS. However, bolting on a bigger turbo isn’t the only thing they do to get power gains, obviously.
After the turbine’s installation, the car’s ECU is then loaded up with Mountune52’s bespoke calibrations. The car also receives an optional uprated clutch to handle the added power while GTI’s with a DSG transmission can get their TCU’s recalibrated as well.
At the touch of a button, via the mTune handset, customers can decide on how much power they want by changing their calibration in a matter of minutes, says the tuning firm. The available settings also include reverting the car back to its stock map, valet mode as well as fully immobilising the vehicle thanks to its anti-theft setting.
“The Golf GTI is an incredibly popular car with a huge community of enthusiasts always striving to take the performance of the car to the next level and we believe that the STAGE 2+ power upgrade does just that” explains Alec Pell-Johnson, Director of mountune and mountune52
Lastly, Mountune52’s Stage 2+ kit gets the firm’s usual 12-month or 12,000-mile (19,200km) warranty against all manufacturer defects. The kit retails from £2,099 or AU$4,191.
