Mitsubishi did release a teaser late last month that showed a long and low two-tone crossover set against a dark and shadowy background called simply the ‘Grand Tourer’. This newest concept, however, isn’t that. Probably.
First of all, the side profile is a mismatch, and add to that the differently shaped squinty headlamps, shoulder-line crease, and a totally different colour – in all, this is another vehicle altogether.
A vehicle that Mitsubishi describes as a seven-seater “crossover MPV” with plans of showing it off at the 2016 Gaikindo International Auto Show in Indonesia taking place in mid-August. Without delving too deeply into the variables of what the car could mean for the recently Nissan part-owned automaker as well as its viability as a production car, this concept looks awfully familiar.
In fact, from this sole teaser image it looks near-identical to the futuristic Mitsubishi eX Concept that they brought to the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. Although, that one probably wasn’t long enough to fit that third row of seats to brand it a seven-seater. A longer eX, then.
It’s unknown whether this newest Mitsubishi concept will be driven exclusively by electric power like the eX, but the sporty wide body people mover will certainly turn heads if most of its styling cues make it to the factory level, and could bode well for future cars for the company being known for their bold design.
Looks like we’ll have to keep our eyes peeled for what happens during its Indonesian unveil next month.
