Mitsubishi Motors has released a new teaser image showing the silhouette of its new concept vehicle, possibly heralding the arrival of a new production model that fits between their current ASX and Outlander models, and is due to debut at this year’s Paris Motor Show in late September.
The Japanese automaker, still in the midst of reeling from the financial spiral that followed an admission that it falsified fuel economy figures on some of its small ‘micro car’ vehicles in its home market, is showing good form in teasing an exciting new concept that would likely premiere a design language that’s ready to furnish its production models with after evolving on its previous concepts such as the XR PHEV II and the eX Concept.
The concept seen here is simply labelled ‘Grand Tourer’, which is a somewhat odd choice given how it would likely fit in between its crossover and full SUV offerings. Perhaps it could be a successor to the first-generation Outlander (known in some markets as the Airtrek), before the name was repurposed to being Mitsubishi’s flagship large SUV.
If that’s the case, an obvious competitor to the production model this Mitsubishi ‘Grand Tourer’ concept could spawn would be the Subaru XV, Kia Sportage, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Mazda CX-5.
Just like those previous concepts, this new concept will be shown as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV, as they like to call them).
