In Europe, Mercedes-Benz has whipped the covers from the all-new GL 63 AMG. Powered by the superb twin-turbocharged AMG 5.5-litre V8 with 416kW/760Nm on-tap, and covering zero to 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds, the GL 63 AMG is a seven-seat family wagon we could fall in love with.

Drive is to all four wheels via the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic transmission and an AMG-developed version of Benz’ 4MATIC system (40:60 front/rear). The air suspension features AMG Ride Control with Active Curve System roll stabilization and three driver-select formats (‘Comfort’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Sport plus’).

Wheels are 21-inch AMG alloys and brakes are up-sized to 390mm front/345mm rear.

Styling sees the usual AMG sporty enhancements including a new front apron with extra cooling and black fins which blends into the 22mm wider front fenders. Same at the rear with a new rear apron and flared arches while the side gets illuminated alloy running boards.

And while the GL 63 AMG is a family-oriented seven-seater (the GL actually provides good space for the third row occupants) the interior isn’t short-changed in the AMG treatment. There’s the usual beautiful AMG flat-bottomed four-spoke steering wheel, leather trim for all seven seats, AMG sports seats up-front, AMG instruments and aluminium paddle shifters for manual gear changes.
