They’re so proud of it, they’ve even given it lights.

McLaren 720S To Debut New V8

With the 620S due for replacement next month, McLaren is turning their hype machines up to eleven. Today they’ve announced a very important part of the upcoming 720S: Its engine.

The 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 will power the new McLaren Super Series, known among journalists as the 720S, which will be making its public showing at the Geneva motor show. Though no specific output figures have been released, McLaren claims that the new engine will hurtle the 720S from rest to 200km/h in just 7.8-seconds.

The engine, dubbed the M840T, gets its power from two turbochargers that are claimed to be more responsive and reduces turbo-lag. A new exhaust system will allow the new engine to breathe, which McLaren says will give the car a particularly sonorous roar when the engine comes on song. So proud are McLaren about the powertrain changes that they’ve even fitted the engine bay with lights, so that proud owners can show off their engines or savour them as they walk up to their McLaren.

Though McLaren has already shown us the car in camouflaged form, the most revealing photo came from a supposedly private, invite-only dealer event where the car was shown off. The widely-circulated photo gave us a glimpse as to what to expect from a new McLaren, and sees a departure from the existing design signatures, especially up front. Previous reports we’ve run have covered the leaked photograph, the carbonfibre-intensive Monocage II body structure, and the active-aerodynamics at play with the new car.

McLaren’s Next Supercar Uses Big Data For Mega Handling

The ‘720S,’ if that is indeed what it will be called, will be bringing on the fight to the very latest entrants into the supercar market. McLaren’s newest will have to hold its own against the Ferrari 488GTB and the Lamborghini Huracan, which means it can’t be a slouch. And if the ‘720S’ can bring the same magic that the 620S did when it debuted, it’ll be quite a fight indeed.
