McLaren is currently developing a replacement for their 650S, the middle-child in their three tier supercar strategy. It occupies the Woking automaker's stable as their ‘Super Series’ car, but that won’t last for much longer.
The new car, internally called P14, is nearing the end of its gestation period and will be unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March. Until then, though, we have only scant confirmed details about their new supercar.
We can see some of the car’s dynamic aero working here, with the rear spoiler acting as a downforce generator or an airbrake - something its current Super Series car also has. Also notable in this picture is the prevalence of exposed carbon fibre for the car’s buttresses and the rear light strip that looks to run across the car’s rear end.
Based on the tone of this new teaser, it looks to be a much more focused car that prioritises light weight and performance to a higher degree than the 650S.
It’s expected to be quite a bit faster, naturally, than the outgoing model, and perhaps herald some new design and engineering directions that McLaren will expand into with their forthcoming models in this new generation.
Like the 650S and 12C that precedes it, this new model will be McLaren’s ‘sweet spot’ car, filling the niche against competitors like the Ferrari 488 and - to a lesser extent - the Lamborghini Aventador.
“The second-generation McLaren Super Series will be as aerodynamically impressive as it is visually beautiful,” commented Mark Vinnels, Executive Director - Product Development, McLaren Automotive. “A range of advanced aerodynamic technologies contributes to maximum generated downforce over 50% greater than that of the McLaren 650S and ensures truly outstanding levels of grip and stability. We have also markedly improved cooling efficiency, with a 15% gain overall and a particular focus on airflow to the engine’s high temperature radiators through a unique new design of dihedral door.”
