Australian introduction “under review.”

2018 Hyundai Kona EV

Korean marque Hyundai has dropped a teaser of a new model that it’ll be bringing to the Geneva motor show, aimed to cement its position “at the forefront of eco mobility.” Its very popular Kona compact SUV will receive a full-electric model, which will go on sale in the middle of the year, and maybe even come to Australia.

Very few details were given in the press release, aside from that the Kona EV will match efficiency and driver-involvement, and that it’ll hit the market this year with a battery range of 470km (on the new World Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure, or WLTP cycle).

Further, the electric Kona is expected to pack “a wide range of convenience and connectivity features,” much like the combustion-powered version, though perhaps there could be more in store for the electric model. Only time will tell.

The Kona EV will join Hyundai’s already burgeoning stable of alternatively-motivated vehicles, including the Hyundai Nexo (the successor to the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen-electric vehicle, the ix35 FCEV) and the Hyundai Ioniq, with the latter available in battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, and parallel-hybrid variations.
