It’ll share a powertrain with the i30N, with 184kW expected.

Hyundai hasn’t yet confirmed the arrival of a hot, performance version of its Kona compact SUV, but it seems that the rumours surrounding it are a lot more than hot air. The possibility of such a model is so close to reality that the team at performance sub-marque N have already started developing a prototype.

This was revealed to UK publication AutoExpress

“I’ve told [the engineers] to build the car and we’ll see what happens with getting it approved. It has to be the i30N powertrain, really. Of course, we can give Kona different specification on suspension and steering, although there are some common components we can use in that area as well, because it’ll be front-wheel drive, like the i30N. But we already know that it has to be that car’s engine and gearbox for the Kona N, yes.” — Albert Biermann, Executive Vice President (N Division), Hyundai Motor Company

It’s explained that the Kona N won’t get the full 202kW that our Performance Pack i30 N gets, instead packing 184kW from the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol mill in standard tune. The Kona N should also get a six-speed manual transmission as standard to make the most of the mill’s very linear power curve, though a dual-clutch automatic will most probably be offered too.

What’s less than clear is whether or not the Kona N will get the same trick front e-diff as the i30 N with the Performance Pack. What is definite is that a Kona N will receive an angrier design, with things like a rear diffuser and exposed exhausts.

The Kona N, should it make production, will be the fourth car to bear the N badge. The i30 N debutante will soon be joined by the Veloster N, destined for Korea and North America, as well as the i30 N Fastback. We have a feeling that a Kona N debut, should there be one, would take place sometime after the arrival of the Fastback.
