The Insight is coming back.

In its previous two iterations, the Honda Insight has always been a very distinctive little hybrid. In its first generation, it took the form of a dinky little eco-car with enclosed rear wheels and only two doors, whereas the second-generation car morphed into a mini-Prius as it were, positioned as a compact saloon of sorts with an IMA hybrid system that, while decent, didn’t really raise the bar in the hybrid market.

The third generation model will change that, or that’s what Honda says.

The new Insight will not only receive a thoroughly updated and revised hybrid powertrain, but it’ll also adopt a far more mainstream appearance that will likely win over more buyers and fans when it arrives next year. While the production model isn’t quite ready for prying eyes yet, this Insight Prototype is, and will be shown for the concept that it is at the upcoming North American International Autoshow in January, which will be held in Detroit, Michigan.

While the Insight has always been traditionally positioned beneath the Honda Civic in the lineup, the new Insight will change that too. The new Insight is described as an “upscale, stylish five-passenger saloon,” befitting its newfound status, and will utilise the very latest hybrid system dubbed ‘Sport Hybrid Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (or i-MMD), similar to what can be found in the Accord Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid (and not the i-DCD system in the Jazz Hybrid we’re more familiar with).

“With its sophisticated styling, dynamic stance, ample interior space and best-in-class performance, the all-new Insight embodies Honda’s approach to creating electrified vehicles without the typical tradeoffs. You won’t have to be an electrification advocate to appreciate the new Insight. It’s a great car in its own right, independent of what’s happening under the hood.” - Henio Arcangeli Jr., General Manager, American Honda Motor Company

The role of oddball alternative-propulsion model has since been taken up by the Honda Clarity, which is offered in Fuel Cell, Electric, and Plug-In Hybrid variations, and takes the same unconventional styling approach as the outgoing Insight.

The 2019 Insight will offer the styling, packaging, features, and performance that mainstream premium car buyers will expect, as well as the inherent benefits of a hybrid powertrain without the usual drawbacks. Production is slated for the facility Honda maintains in Greensburg, Indiana.
