But hey, at least it has more twist.
While Mercedes-Benz themselves have so far been non-committal insofar as letting the boffins at AMG take a run at their new X-Class ute, independent tuners Brabus have gone right ahead and gone bananas, resulting in the D4 PowerXtra. The name isn’t just facetious though, as there is a power and torque bump with the Brabus treatment, though it’s just a little bit.
The D4 is built off of the rather mild X250d, with a 2.3-litre four-pot oiler sourced from Renault. With Brabus’ fettling, the engine now puts out 15kW and 60Nm more over the standard unit, to hit a grand total of 155kW and 510Nm. The century sprint is dispatched in a mere 11.5-seconds, though we have no doubt that in-gear shove will be noticeably improved.
Going the Brabus route with the X-Class also nets quite a number of aesthetic upgrades. You’ll no doubt have noticed the bodykit, as well as the 20-inch ‘Monoblock X’ alloys. There are also roof-mounted LED light bars (two of them), four exhausts, LED strips at the lowest edge of the front bumper, and Brabus badging.
The interior hasn’t been spared either. You’ll find alloy sports pedals and matching scuff plates, as well as upholstery from Brabus’ finest range of leathers.
If you’re not keen on the 4-pot oiler, fret not, as Brabus says that they are working on the X350d V6 model as we speak. However, neither Brabus ute has been confirmed for Australia, though we imagine there will be scores of people wanting one of these…
