Seems like Mercedes wants to keep this ute a workhorse.

Though Mercedes-Benz’s new X-Class ute may still be fresh in the consciousness of many, it seems that the German luxury car marque has serious plans for the new ‘premium ute’ in its stable. With three distinct appearance packages already on offer for the car, it was alluded at the launch that an AMG-styled package may be offered in the future.

Speaking to Australian media was the head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, Folksier Morhinweg, who made it clear that the doors are certainly open for the company’s performance arm to come and have a cosmetic meddle. “Wait and see,” he said. “I think the car is quite impressive, when it comes to styling and so on.”

While Morhinweg gave with his right, he took with his left by quashing the possibility of a performance variant of the X-Class, tuned by AMG. Specifically one with a V8 soundtrack.

“I think the product is not right for a V8. Therefore, I think what the guys are doing is great. But I think so far we have decided nothing in that direction. This is something that we will listen and look at carefully. I think we have a strong line-up with three lines (Pure, Progressive, and Power) and we will now go to the market, and then we will decide. So far, we haven’t decided. But never say never.” – Folksier Morhinweg, Mercedes-Benz Vans

The X-Class’ three trim grades are designed to appeal to different ends of the market, with the lower-end models aimed at more utilitarian uses while higher-end trims made to appeal to cashed-up tradies. While the CarShowroom office agrees that the X-Class is quite a looker, the render from X-Tomi Design of an ‘X63 AMG’ gives us an idea of how an even more aggressive X-Class could look, and we like it.
