If you like BMW SUVs that have been put through the M Division hazing regimen - emerging as hardened, angry, and faster versions of what they were before - then you may have been more than satisfied with the X5 M and X6 M.
However, if you had a particular liking to the colour black and especially to it being paired up with a little bit of red, then Black Fire Editions of both those Bimmers would have been just up your alley when they were first announced in June.
But it’s good news for those niche high performance connoisseurs, as BMW Australia will be bringing in limited numbers of both those cars; 15 examples of the X5 M and just 10 of the X6 M are due to make their way Down Under.
Upon the announcement, BMW Group Australia CEO Marc Werner, said: “I am very excited to introduce these Black Fire limited editions to the Australian market. The X5 and X6 M are equally capable on the race track, when commuting or when taking the family out on the weekend – I should know, because I drive them personally. With these awesome Black Fire editions, the BMW X5 M and X6 M are more appealing than ever.”
As you can tell, both of these are do indeed have a very dark theme, with their Sapphire Black metallic exterior, to their carbon fibre mirror caps, and their blacked-out 21-inch light alloy wheels. They also come with tinted glass to complete the look, and probably because it needs all the sun reflecting help it needs being in such heat-absorbing colour.
Inside, the fine grain Merino leather upholstery is finished (you guessed it) in black but accented by Mugello Red. This colour combination is also played on the dashboard, door trim, centre console, instrument panel stitching, and door pulls. Finally, there are special ‘Edition Black Fire’ signets to remind everyone you’re in something a little bit special.
As is the car with X5s and X6s to come out of BMW M, these are too powered by the S63 4.4-litre bi-turbo V8 that’s shared with the now-old F10 M5. They both produce an identical 423kW and 750Nm and achieve the century sprint in 4.2 seconds in spite of their different body styles.
