As previously predicted, BMW has now taken the the wraps off their most hardcore M3 yet this generation: the CS. The new limited-edition variant of what is arguably BMW’s most esteemed M car, this new Club Sport badge brings with it a lot of the same enhancements applied to the two-door M4 CS.

The arrival of these pair of CSes, as well as the nature of their limited production run, is the clearest indication yet that BMW is closing the book on this fifth-generation 3 Series (F30) as well as that of its coupe sibling, the F32. A new generation of each is planned to be unveiled in 2018 before making its debut as a 2019 model, sporting updated looks and an advanced new architecture.

In a nutshell, what the Munich automaker’s M division has done is endowed the standard M3’s S55 twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six petrol with more power while stripping away unnecessary weight and swapping out certain components with lightened alternatives.

These include a roof and bonnet made from CFRP (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer), meanwhile there’s a larger rear diffuser as well as a pouty carbon splitter and subtle spoiler on the boot deck. When teamed with the increased power output of 343kW and 600Nm, the M3 CS needs just 3.9-seconds sprint to 100km/h from rest.

Like all M cars with the exception of the upcoming M5, this M3 CS remains exclusively rear-driven with grunt and twist being funnelled through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. A contributing factor to the CS’s emphasis on lightweight materials has more to do with weight distribution and maintaining a lower centre of gravity over raw reduction of mass (BMW quotes an approximate 10kg being reduced over the M3 Competition Pack).

Matters are less of a no-nonsense affair than the exterior might have lead one to believe, and despite its intimidating visage, the M3 CS is still meant to offer a high degree of equipment and comfort. Features such as BMW’s Navigation System Professional, premium Harman/Kardon surround audio system, and automatic climate control are maintained as standard equipment.

The sports seats, particularly up front, have a two-tone motif to them and comprise of full leather and Alcantara for a combination of support and comfort. There’s also plenty of Alcantara covering much of the interior trim, partially covering the dashboard, front armrest, and steering wheel.

It isn’t clear how many units of the M3 CS are destined for each region, and we’d be surprised if a fair few don’t end up headed to Australian showrooms in the near future. But with just 1,200 planned units to be built starting from March 2018, ownership will be rather exclusive.
