Following the success of the racy BMW M3 GTS, the German giant has unveiled another limited edition M3 – the M3 CRT (Carbon Racing Technology).

Only 67 examples will be produced and the BMW M3 CRT features new technology for carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) which has enabled broader use without sacrificing strength. For example the BMW M3 CRT runs a CFRP bonnet which alone is half the weight of the aluminium bonnet fitted to other M3s.

CFRP is also used in the shells of the BMW M3 CRT seats (four individual seats) as well as the rear spoiler and front air ducts.

All-up, the BMW M3 CRT tips the scales at 1,580 kgs, some 45 kgs under the normal M3. That also means improved chassis balance with 48.4 per cent of the weight centered over the rear axle.

Under the bonnet, the BMW M3 CRT shares its powerplant with the M3 GTS – the 331kW/440Nm 4.4-litre V8. Drive is to the rear wheels via BMW’s seven-speed M doubleclutch transmission.

BMW says the new CFRP technology will be used in volume manufacturing from 2013 in the BMWi3 and BMWi8 ActiveHybrid drive models.
