And it’ll be the “most beautiful mid-engined car on the road.” Humble.
British supercar firm Aston Martin surprised quite a number of people in April when the company unveiled the successor to its Vanquish, dubbed the DBS Superleggera, bringing back a name from its past but retiring a hallowed name that perhaps resonated better with younger Aston fans.
However, it seems that the Vanquish name hasn’t been, uh, vanquished. It has merely been put on ice, and it might just be thawed to take pride placement on Aston’s latest folly: A mid-engined supercar that’ll be a right headache to cars like the McLaren 720S and Ferrari 488GTB.
Marek Reichmann, Aston’s chief creative officer, played coy with Australian media during the launch event of the DBS Superleggera in Germany when asked about the reintroduction of the Vanquish name on Gaydon’s new mid-engined supercar:
“Without saying yes, that sounds like a plausible solution for a beautiful name like Vanquish.” — Marek Reichmann, Chief Creative Officer, Aston Martin
Reichmann may have stopped short of confirming the Vanquish name’s next permutation, but he did say that the name would return in one of the 7 new cars that the firm intends to introduce in the same number of years. Separately (sort of), Reichmann revealed that the company has made great progress with the mid-engined supercar project, having made use of knowledge gained during the gestation of Project Valkyrie.
Additionally, he also said that the new model would be “the most beautiful mid-engined car on the road,” which is certainly ambitious, but not at all unachievable given how sensational Aston’s latest crop of cars look. If you’re hoping that the ‘Vanquish’ will carry a V12, keep hoping: Its primary competitors run V8s, and so we’re expecting it to do the same. It’ll also likely use a new carbon-fibre monocoque construction replete with aluminium sub-frames to keep the weight down. Should be a right riot on a track when it arrives circa-2020.
