Volkswagen has pulled a surprise at the annual enthusiasts meeting in Worthesee, Australia, wheeling-out this wild track-based Golf GTI concept.
Naturally based on the just-launched seventh generation Golf, the long wheelbase, lower, wider concept is just for motorsport action so rest-easy Golf GTI fans hoping for a road-going version.
Created under the direction of Volkswagen styling guru Klaus Bischoff, the GTI concept offers a much wider track than the standard Golf 1595mm at the front and 1579mm at the rear) and rides on unique 20-inch wheels. Brakes (for track use) are ceramic.
Features include recessed headlights, honeycomb grille and racing colours in white, red and black.
Under the bonnet is a turbocharged V6 TSI with 370kW/560Nm driving all four wheels via a DSG gearbox. Zero to 100km/h takes just 3.9 seconds.
Inside things take the minimalist approach but with some luxury. The back seat has an X-shaped cross-member and storage for two helmets. But there’s an on-board camera to allow the driver to network on social media…erm, but not when accelerating from zero to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds we’d suggest.
