Golf number 30-million has rolled from the assembly line at Volkswagen’s massive head-office in Wolfsburg, Germany.
Good news indeed as Volkswagen Group Australia starts work to repair the damage caused by last week’s recall of almost 25,000 vehicles in Australia and the preceding media storm.
Some argue the Golf is the vehicle which has underscored Volkswagen’s growth to its current pre-eminent position in the global automotive landscape. From its humble beginnings back in 1974 as the German giant dared to convert from the air-cooled rear-wheel-drive Beetle, to a new generation of water-cooled, front wheel-drive hatchbacks the Golf has become the global small car.
Of course there are plenty of milestones included in the history of the Golf – milestones not only for Volkswagen’s number one vehicle but for the entire automotive world. These include turbo-diesel engines, electronic stability control, twin-clutch automatic transmission and the automatic post-collision braking system which debuted in the just-launched seventh-generation model.
To celebrate the arrival of Golf number 30-million Volkswagen held an open day at its Wolfsburg plant where the actual vehicle was on prominent display. To give you an idea of scale: just the parts of the Wolfsburg plant which are under a roof are bigger than the entire Principality of Monaco!
