But no prices yet. Boo.
It’s like Volkswagen knows how much we love the Golf. Rather than telling us everything at once, they’ve been rather cheekily teasing the ‘Golf 7.5’ range bit-by-bit. First, they told us about all the core models (that was last month), but left out the 110TDI diesel estate, as they weren’t sure at the time about whether it would make it to Australia. Now though, not only have they determined its offering here, but they’ve also announced details of the hot GTi and hotter-still R variants too.
We know the kit, but not the price. We know the R will remain the fastest Golf on offer, with 213kW & 380Nm, good for hitting 100km/h from rest in just 4.8-seconds. While that’s perfectly adequate (if not more than adequate), it’s marred slightly by the fact that in cooler countries, the R produces 228kW & 400Nm, and does the 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.6-seconds.
As before, the R will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-pot petrol, mated to a new seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic or a six-speed manual, with power going to all four wheels via its 4Motion system. The new R will get things like the huge (and very pretty) Discover Pro navigation system with smartphone mirroring (measuring in at 9.2-inches across), a 400W Dynaudio system, gesture control, leather seats with electric adjustment (driver), virtual instrument display, privacy glass, LED taillights with dynamic indicators, LED headlights, a rear-view camera, and autonomous emergency braking among others. Strong standard spec can be supplemented further with the Driver Assistance Pack (which throws in adaptive cruise, lane assist, and blind-spot monitoring).
The 110TDI Highline estate has been detailed this time round too, which brings with it a lot of the features we saw in the 100TDI hatch that Volkswagen outlined last month. This means it’ll get things like 17-inch alloys, LED headlights, front foglights, a panoramic sunroof, power folding door mirrors, keyless entry and go, a smattering of chrome inside and out, LED interior lighting, LED reading lights, carpet floor mats (wow), electric drivers seats, and leather trim. The 110TDI Highline estate will also offer Driver Assistance upgrades as an option, as well as infotainment upgrades.
Now, the GTI. The mac-daddy of hot hatchbacks will be arriving with the same 2.0-litre blown four-pot as in the R, though it makes a more reasonable 169kW and 350Nm, with a six-speed DSG and six-sped manual on offer as before. It’ll also get things like AirCare dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and go, a leather steering wheel, cruise control, premium multifunction drivers display, ‘Discover’ 8-inch infotainment system with smartphone mirroring, LED ambient cabin lighting, 18-inch alloys, 7-airbags with driver drowsiness detection, autonomous emergency braking (at city speeds), automatic LED headlights, and front fog lights. The 9.2-inch infotainment screen like you get in the Golf R can be specified here, as well as Driver Assistance and Luxury option packs.
We’re still waiting on those prices, Volkswagen.
