New lineup, new tech, new prices?

2017 Volkswagen Golf Revealed

Volkswagen Australia has finally released some details on the incoming Golf Mk7.5, giving us an idea of what to expect when the facelifted hatch, estate, and AllTrack make Australian landfall sometime soon.

The biggest change is in the engine lineup. The entry-level 92TSi model (which had 92kW of power, would you believe) has been canned, with favour falling to the 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre turbo four-pot petrol instead, and badged the 110TSI. The other engine on offer is a 110kW/340Nm diesel, badged the 110TDi. Only the lower-end of the Golf lineup get a six-speed manual option, with higher variants coming with a seven-speed dual-clutch auto as standard.

Base-model 110TSI’s get a new 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, replete with Apple CarPlay and a reversing camera, along with autonomous emergency braking, 16-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, a leather steering wheel, and driver drowsiness sensors as standard. A step up to the 110TSI Trendline bags automatic headlights, automatic wipers, an automatically-dimming rear view mirror, all-round park assist, a centre armrest on the rear bench, and lumbar adjustment for the front seats. Estate models get roof rails and a luggage organiser net.

Comfortline models get all of the above, as well as dual-zone climate control, satellite navigation, 17-inch alloys, a smattering of chrome on the exterior and interior, additional storage compartments (yes, practicality will cost you), and a 12V power outlet in the boot. The Comfortline trim marks the beginning of the standard-fitment of the dual-clutch automatic we mentioned earlier.

The top-shelf Highline model gets a choice of either petrol or diesel power, with either getting front fog lights, heated sports seats, leather upholstery, electric adjustment in the drivers’ seat (with lumbar), automatically-folding side mirrors, keyless entry and go, ambient lighting, LED headlights, panoramic sunroof, and even more chrome over the Comfortline model.

Volkswagen Australia intends to bring in several option packs for the Golf lineup, allowing customers to tailor their car to their specific tastes. The one we recommend highly is the Driver Assistance pack, which can be fitted to all but the base 110TSI, and bundles in things like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, park assist, and a driving mode selector.

The Infotainment package is also available for the two higher variants, which sees fitment of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster (like Audi’s Virtual Cockpit), a beautiful 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment screen replete with gesture and voice control, and a 400-watt sound system with 10-speakers and a subwoofer.

There’s an R-Line pack on offer for the Highline models too, which sees an R-Line exterior and interior makeover, 18-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension, and darker tint.

2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

If you have a love-hate relationship with SUVs, fear not, as the Volkswagen Golf AllTrack soldiers on to cater to you. The entry-level AllTrack is now the 132TSI, with a 1.8-litre turbo-four that’s good for 132kW/280Nm, which also sees service in the 132TSI Premium. Top-spec 135TDI models get a 125kW/380Nm turbo-diesel, while all cars get a six-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission sending power to all four wheels.

Standard kit on AllTrack models get things like dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and go, a leather steering wheel, 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system (with Apple CarPlay), LED ambient interior lighting, reversing camera, park assist, and driver-drowsiness warning. 17-inch allow wheels feature here as standard too, along with autonomous emergency braking, front fog lamps, automatic headlights of the LED variety, and automatic wipers.

Premium models get heated front sports seats, leather interior trim, satellite navigation, and LED cornering lights to justify their premium. A ‘Sports Luxury’ option pack will add to the Alltrack things like 18-inch alloys, paddle shifters on the steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, electric front seats, folding side mirrors, and rear privacy glass.

Volkswagen Australia has yet to announce prices for the Golf lineup, but we expect to hear about it closer to the official launch date. You can check out our coverage of the ‘new’ Golf’s debut here
