2014 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 5D HATCHBACK GTI PERFORMANCE
I'm resident in the UK where we can buy the manual 6 speed version. My previous car was a 2013 Audi Sportback A3 1.8TFSI S Tronic S-Line The reason I bought a VW golf GTI Performance Package was that, having had a test drive, the VW Golf GTI has proven to be of equal build quality, a better ride and comes with far more equipment as standard. Plus the level of sound insulation surpasses the Audi A3 S-Line.
If the Audi A3 had been able to matched the Golf for equipment, body design and cache that the Audi branding delivers I would have gladly paid the difference in price.
My Golf would appear to draw more attention from other drivers than the A3 ever managed causing young Ford Focus ST and the odd BMW owners draw me into a few traffic light Grand Prix face-offs. However, knowing that the GTI Performance with its 230 BHP on tap would be quite capable of seeing them blush when a 37 Y.O. woman driver walked all over them continues to amuse and please me.
Overall, the Golf GTI is proving to be everything and more that would have expected from my Audi A3. But I am not the only person in my family to express their liking for the Volkswagen. My fifteen Y.O. niece has noticed the more supple suspension, the better sound insulation and higher levels of interior appointments and features offered. If buying a Volkswagen is seen as going down market then so be It. But I am living proof that this is not a step down, rather its a step across and a gain in value for money.
To sum up, the Volkswagen Golf GTI with the Performance Pack is not to be seen as the A3's poor relation. It's just as good a quality product as the Audi A3 but when it comes to more bang for your bucks the GTI scored a points win.
