A rather nice way to say goodbye.
It’s no secret that German automotive behemoth Volkswagen is preparing the release of an all-new, third iteration of its rather popular Touareg large SUV, with prototype cars running around all over the place (and getting photographed in the process). So as a sendoff for the handsome current generation, VW has released a new ‘Monochrome’ special edition Touareg that adds plenty of visual flair and actually packs a pretty good value punch.
The Touareg Monochrome is based on the entry-level 150TDI model (which presently goes for a smidge under $70,000), though for the special edition, you’ll be paying nearly $74,990 (before ORCs). That $6000 hike does come with a raft of accessories and unique aesthetic touches though, so it’s not all bad news.
Upon first sight of the Monochrome, you’ll notice that it has unique 19-inch ‘Moab’ alloys, mirror caps finished in gloss black, a darkened lower front grille and equally dark roof rails. The taillights have also been smoked to give it a meaner look, and we have to admit, it’s rather fetching.
The interior sees the fitment of Vienna leather seats finished in a two-tone black-grey combination, while there are aluminium and piano black inserts to be found in various places throughout the cabin. Electronic goodies are tacked on to, with things like intelligent cruise control, city-speed AEB, keyless entry and go, electric boot, and paddle shifters all coming as standard on the Monochrome. And to complete the look, there’s privacy glass for the rear windows.
No options are available for the Monochrome, but you can opt for either metallic white or metallic grey exterior paint finishes, or a “Deep Black” pearlescent tone. The 150TDI powertrain is also carried over wholesale, so you’ll find a familiar 150kW and 450Nm waiting for you under the bonnet, with transmission duties handled by an eight-speed jobbie.
