The successor to the Volkswagen CC gets a little more distinctive.
Ahead of the Geneva motorshow next month, Volkswagen has released a couple of teaser images of its headline feature at the historic Swiss exhibition. The Arteon will be replacing the CC (or Comfort Coupe) in the Volkswagen lineup, and retain its position ahead of the Passat on which it’s based. The CC was highly regarded for its sleek looks and plush interior, and it seems that the Arteon seeks to build on that.
While the current CC (and the pre-facelift Passat CC) could still be seen as a Passat derivative, Volkswagen’s designers have pushed the Arteon a little further to help differentiate itself as a more premium, lifestyle-oriented offering. The teaser images that Volkswagen has released today show off its unique fascia, with LED headlights that seem to blend seamlessly into what appears to be a frameless grille. The ‘U’ elements within the light clusters remain, as a signature VW feature of the modern age.
The rear of the Arteon is seen here as well, also featuring its LED taillights. Its link to the CC is seen here most clearly, as the taillight graphics appear to mimic those of the current car to some degree. The strong shoulders of the CC have been exaggerated here, and will likely result in a more athletic, more dynamic four-door coupe look than the CC that spawned it.
The Arteon will also serve as a platform for Wolfsburg to showcase some of its latest and greatest driver assistance systems, which the company says “are typically reserved for luxury automobiles.” There will likely be some level of semi-autonomy on offer here, which will place the Arteon well among more established, more premium competitors.
Volkswagen calls it an “avantgarde gran turismo,” and by the looks of things, that’s not an inaccurate description. All told, the design looks to follow those of the Sport Coupe GTE concept from 2015 almost entirely, minus the obvious concept-car details. If you really need to see what the Arteon may look like right this second, you can read our previous report on some Dutch renders of the new car here.
