Volkswagen Australia has revealed the local specifications for the new second generation Tiguan that’s due to hit showrooms here in September. It was revealed at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show and has already made its European market debut.
In addition to an all-new exterior and interior, the new Tiguan is also built upon Volkswagen’s new modular MQB platform, is equipped with more comprehensive safety featus, and hosts a the company’s new line of engines.
Australia will receive the all-new Tiguan in three choices of TSI petrol engines, but we’re unsure whether they are indeed different engines or a single engine in different levels of tune since Volkswagen has yet to reveal anything more than their power figures: 110kW, 132kW, and a range-topping 162kW version.
Our strong suspicion, however, is that the top two power outputs for their petrol offerings come from a 2.0-litre TSI four pot (132kW and 162kW), while the lower output 110kW TSI is a 1.4-litre four-cylinder.
For those looking for a diesel, the new Tiguan will have a 110kW or 140kW option with BlueMotion efficiency technology. Every model besides the baseline 110kW TSI petrol will come equipped with Volkswagen’s latest 4MOTION all-wheel drive system with Active Control.
Inside, there is a 3-zone climate control system, a digital instrument display which is branded as Active Info Display, an 8-inch infotainment and navigation system with VW’s App-Connect system.
Standard safety features include Front Assist, City Emergency Brake, Lane Assist, driver Fatigue Detection, Active Bonnet, Multi-Collision Brake, Park Assist and Rear View Camera (RVC).
Buyers here will be able to choose from three trim levels starting with the entry level Tiguan Trendline, followed up by the better specified Comfortline, and finally the the Highline. Both the Comfortline and Highline spec Tiguans are eligible for further optional packages.
The Tiguan Trendline is only offered with a 110kW TSI petrol engine, paired to either a six-speed manual or dual-clutch DSG automatic. Standard kit includes 17-inch alloy wheels, LED tail lights, 8-inch infotainment system, USB interface, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, cruise control, and leather steering wheel.
The Tiguan Comfortline can be had with a 110kW TSI petrol, a 110kW TDI diesel, or a 132kW TSI petrol – all of which are paired to a DSG dual-clutch transmission. This spec gains 4MOTION all-wheel drive, 3-zone climate control, satellite navigation, colour multi-function display, as well as chrome roof rails and metallic exterior trim.
Finally, there’s the Tiguan Highline with either a 140kW TDI diesel or 162kW TSI petrol, with both mated to a DSG automatic. In addition to all the features found in the previous two trim levels, the Highline adds 18-inch alloys, keyless entry and start, electronic tailgate, Vienna leather upholstery, Discover Pro satellite navigation, heated front seats, ambient interior lighting, gearshift paddles, and premium LED tail lamps.
Pricing for the all-new Tiguan will be released closer to its September launch date, says Volkswagen Australia.
