“Dressed to the nines” is how Toyota describes its latest special-run variant of its Kluger large SUV, which has been dubbed the ‘Black Edition’ for rather obvious reasons. Based on the mid-range GXL model, the Kluger Black Edition aims to “dial up the attitude” of what is otherwise a pretty regular family hauler.
For the $55,970 it commands, the Kluger Black throws out the 18-inch alloys that come as standard with the GXL in favour of 19-inch gloss-black units, and the same dark hue is applied to the roof rails, the grille, the lower side mouldings, and even the headlight internals. The Kluger Black can however be had in 7 colours other than black, should the treatment you see here come off as a bit much.
As it’s based on the GXL, there’s plenty of equipment lobbed on as standard. This includes Toyota’s Safety Sense suite of advanced driver assistance kit which throws in AEB, lane-departure warning, intelligent cruise control and smart high-beams, as well as a reversing camera, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and 7-airbags.
There are also things like 3-zone climate control, hands-free tailgate with openable rear windscreen, “premium” trim & upholstery, keyless entry & go, a powered drivers seat, an 8-inch infotainment display with satellite navigation and DAB+, automatic wipers, and a 4.2-inch driver-info display between the dials.
No mechanical changes have been applied here, so the Kluger Black continues to draw motivation from a 3.5-litre atmo V6 petrol engine, putting out 218kW and 350Nm, with power going to the front wheels as standard through an 8-speed automatic. All-wheel drive can be had too, for an additional $4k on the asking price. Fuel consumption is rated between 9.1L/100km to 9.5L/100km officially, though expect to see something around 11L/100km in the real world.
