As we head into 2018, Toyota Australia have detailed some updates that they've dropped for their 86 coupe. The already nimble rear-wheel drive sports car’s abilities are to be further enhanced by the inclusion of an optional Performance Kit that new buyers can specify.
Before we get into that, there’s also some new goodies for the 86 across all variants, including standard satellite navigation by way of an updated Toyota Link infotainment system. At the same time, the updated range has also undergone a pricing change for the new model year, with it now beginning at $31,440 (an increase of $650) for the GT and from $36,640 (a $150 increase) for better-specified the GTS.
The following additions that are now packaged as this Performance Kit might sound familiar to fans of the 86 as Toyota Australia previously offered an identical upgrade through a 60-car limited edition run earlier this year. Not so limited after all?
These additions include all-round larger Brembo brake rotors and callipers, specifically-tuned Sachs performance dampers, new 17-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels finished in Anthracite, and some other minor tweaks to the suspension geometry to tie it all together.
This Performance Kit is available on both the GT and GTS variants of the Toyota 86, costing an extra $2,900 and $2,200 respectively. The $700 differential comes down to kit’s inclusion of larger wheels (and corresponding tyres) over the base car’s 16-inch alloys.
As expected, there are no changes made to the coupe’s D4S 2.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-four. Sourced from Subaru, it produces 152kW at 7,000rpm and 212Nm at 6,400rpm when selected with a manual transmission. Paired with 6-speed automatic, however, and max output drops to 147kW/205Nm.
Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said: "We've chosen two renowned performance suppliers - brands that are used in Formula 1 - to expand the 86 coupe's credentials as a true driver's car. These performance components will add to driver involvement and enjoyment, whether it is on the road or the track.”
