Despite having been launched in 2012, the Toyota 86 & Subaru BRZ remain two firm favourites among driving enthusiasts, who adore them for their amazing chassis balance and eager flat-four engines. However, despite rumours circulating that we can expect to welcome a second generation of the well-received sports cars, a new report coming out of Japan suggests otherwise.
A publication called Japanese Nostalgic Car has quoted an unpublished issue of fellow Japanese publication Best Car, suggesting that the two cars are set to be phased out with this generation, as the interest surrounding them has begun to tilt in favour of the new Toyota Supra. Making matters worse is that in Japan, the Toyota Supra is available with a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, further narrowing the gap between the 86/BRZ and the Supra.
This of course flies in the face of several earlier reports saying that the two cars will be renewed to a new generation by 2021. But that said, neither rumour has been confirmed by either Subaru or Toyota, though Best Car reports that the unlikelihood of a new generation of Toyobaru twins are down to the two companies disagreeing on future direction for the models.
While they might not be in agreement for the future of the BRZ & 86, Subaru & Toyota are rumoured to be in talks of bringing the Toyota MR2 back with the help of Subaru technology. That said, Subaru has categorically denied working on a mid-engined car to replace the BRZ so… maybe they’re just doing it for Toyota?
