There were smug “I told you so” looks when Toyota unveiled the open-top version of the superb 86 rear-drive sports car at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year.
All the experts raced to their laptops to announce real competition for the Mazda MX-5.
Alas, the boys and girls in Geneva may have got carried-away.
Reports from North America over the weekend suggest the open-top ’86 may be a goner.
The automotive ‘Bush Telegraph’ is saying development costs are too high and the 86 convertible would be too expensive in a direct comparison with the MX-5.
Nothing official from Toyota of course and we’re still willing to wager a Mars Bar on the open-top 86 taking pole position on the Toyota stand at the Tokyo Motor Show later this year.
