Mitsubishi is set to follow Lexus in offering hybrid-powered SUVs – the company set to unveil its plug-in hybrid PX-MiEV II at the Tokyo Motor Show next month.

The good-looking mid-size SUV is also a good indication of how the next generation Mitsubishi Outlander will look.

Power comes from Mitsubishi’s 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, combined with a hybrid electric drive system derived from the company’s i-MiEV electric car.

Mitsubishi says the compact SUV can cover 50kms on pre electric power and has a combined range of more than 800kms. In normal city driving the PX-MiEV II can be driven exclusively as an electric vehicle with the petrol motor seamlessly cutting in to provide battery charge when needed.

According to Mitsubishi, combining both petrol and electric power allows the PX-MiEV II to accelerate like a V6-powered vehicle.

All-wheel-drive comes via a new twin-motor system and Mitsubishi’s S-AWC (Super-All Wheel Control).

Expect more details to emerge at the Tokyo Motor Show.
