We’re drooling.

Tickford Unveils Commemorative Supercharged Mustang GT

The year was 1977. Allan Moffat and Colin Bond had been fending off aggressive attacks from all directions throughout the 1,000km Bathurst 1000 race in their Ford Falcons. Despite the odds, the duo raced to a one-two finish in their white blue-and-red striped cars in one of the greatest wins in motoring history.

Forty years later, local tuning company Tickford has decided to commemorate the historic win with a limited release of a supercharged Ford Mustang GT, designed to commemorate that win at Mount Panorama. In a nod to the Falcons of 1977, the 2017 Ford Mustang GT carries with it near-identical livery as the touring cars that clinched the title four decades ago, while also sporting a series of bespoke modifications to dial things up to eleven.

With just 77 cars being made, the commemorative limited edition is designed for the Mustang GT that packs the 5.0-litre V8 under the bonnet. As part of the upgrade package, owners will see wheels uprated to 20-inch wheels, and the addition of a supercharger under the bonnet to increase the V8’s punch. A series of other modifications will also be included, but those have yet to be announced.

Speaking about the Tickford commemorative edition, Allan Moffat seemed incredibly pleased. “The team at Tickford have done a very thorough job with a modern interpretation of my 1977 XC Hardtop. While the Falcon has sadly been consigned to the history books, the Mustang was always one of my favourite cars to race, and I had considerable success in them. Ford have done a great job with the latest one.”

“The Tickford Bathurst '77 Special looks amazing, produces an unbelievable amount of power and the finish across all areas of the vehicle highlights why the return of Tickford is so important for the Australian automotive industry. These guys know what they are doing and it shows in this special edition,” he concluded.

While there are various other modifications to the Mustang GT that have yet to be detailed, we have little doubt that with the changes in place the Tickford Bathurst ’77 Special will be considerably more potent than the standard car, and should see performance increase over the 308kW/530Nm the standard V8 offers. Prices have also not been detailed at the time of writing, but we’re confident that the sheer desirability of these models will easily outweigh the upgrade costs.
