Coca-Cola has partnered with Ford North America to develop a new interior fabric made from re-cycled soft drink bottles.
Called PlantBottle technology, the application in Ford’s Fusion (Mondeo to us) Energi plug-in hybrid research vehicle is the first use of the technology beyond PET packaging.
Consisting of up to 30 per-cent plant-based materials, Ford and Coca-Cola say PlantBottle technology shows the potential when two giant brands get together with the aim of reducing petroleum and other fossil fuels hitherto used for traditional PET fabrics.
The Ford Fusion Energi uses the material for the fabrics covering seat cushions, seat backs, head-restraints, door panel inserts and head linings.
Ford will display the Energi at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this week.
