Dropping the P for some extra R(ange).
Without any media release, EV mavericks Tesla have rolled out new variants for its Model S luxury saloon and Model X SUV, dubbed the 100D. The new variants utilise the same 100kWh battery packs from the Ludicrous-equipped P100Ds, but in dropping the ‘P’ prefix, realigns its focus on range rather than outright performance.
While the P100D grabs headlines for its neck-snapping acceleration (completing the century sprint in just 2.7-seconds in the Model S and 3.1-seconds in the Model X), the 100D hits 100km/h from rest in 4.4-seconds (in the Model S, and 5.0-seconds in the Model X). Hardly slow, but not Tesla-Ludicrous levels of fast either.
Instead, what the 100D offers over the performance variant is more range: The Model S 100D can go 19km farther than its faster sibling, while the Model X 100D offers 23km more range. The total range on a single charge for the saloon and SUV now stand at 632km & 565km respectively; In comparison, the P100D saloon and SUV can only go 613km & 542km on a single change, respectively.
These range-centric models are now open for orders in Australia, which can be selected under the 90D variant, which then offers the option of a 100kWh battery pack. The bigger battery will incur a $13,925 premium on the Model S saloon, while the SUV will be $16,245 dearer with the big battery.
