Tesla has, at one stroke, seemed to narrow and expand buyer options when choosing an brand new Model S electric saloon. Specifically, it concerns of axing of a battery tier, the P90D or original Ludicrous spec, and the addition of the a fully glass roof.
News of the latter is of more interest as it comes shortly after the Californian EV maker announced the formation of the Tesla Glass division, no doubt permeating some new expertise and production resources towards this end.
New buyers using the online configurator, or Tesla Design Studio, can select from having either a typical fixed metal roof finished the exterior colour, a panoramic and partly retractable sunroof, or now can also have a fixed glass roof - costing $3,000 and $2,300 respectively.
Moving a little further down the online configurator is the powertrain selection. Now neatly missing the P90D option and instead replaced with newer and more powerful P100D at the high end. With the 100kWh stored per charge, the Model S can has an NEDC estimated range of 613km and can sprint via its dual electric motors to 100km/h from rest in a stupidly quick 2.7 seconds in eerie silence.
For those worried about the glass roof slowly overheating the Model S’ cabin, Tesla says the glass coating provides a block from 98 percent of UV rays and reflects 81 percent of the heat that strikes its surface. That should be enough for sun soaked countries like ours in the hottest of times, hopefully.
Also noteworthy is the inclusion of the Ludicrous Speed Upgrade as a standard feature on the new-default P100D variants of both vehicles that support it, the Model X and Model S. A very welcome addition.
