End of production woes, or beginning of new ones?

2018 Tesla Model 3

Despite only perhaps just surfaced out from under production woes, Tesla has announced that it’ll be taking orders for new variants of its Model 3 compact saloon by the end of the month, or so it was tweeted by CEO Elon Musk. The long-awaited dual-motor Model 3 will arrive in July, alongside a new ‘performance’ variant that will do its best to tear your face off.

For those who might not have been keeping up with the Model 3, it’s the American company’s most popular model to date, with over half a million of them pre-ordered ahead of production. However, pushing into the mass market have caused endless trouble for Tesla, who have faced setback after setback as they tried to feed that demand. They finally seem on track now though, building only one variant of the hotly-anticipated 3, so we wonder if it’s entirely wise for them to now start complicating matters with more variants…

Ill-advised decision or not, the all-wheel drive and performance Model 3 versions will come online by July, with the dual-motor car expected to pack more than the already-generous 500km range offered by the rear-drive Model 3. The performance model will likely offer a less-generous range, in exchange for some serious, serious grunt.

For those waiting for an air-suspension option to materialise, there isn’t any good news in sight. Elon Musk has clarified that air-suspended Model 3s will likely not come round until sometime in 2019, given the further complexity that such a system would add to the production line. However, Model S and Model X buyers will be happy to know that more trim options will be added to the lineup, consisting of wood trims in darker or lighter finishes than what is presently available.
